Team approach helps courageous young man win long battle over two sarcomas

Kyle Harvey is barely 20, but he has already survived two serious cancers.

In 1994, Valerie Harvey took her son, Kyle, to the emergency room after he got sick while in kindergarten. What looked like appendicitis turned out to be a ruptured tumor in his abdomen. The tumor turned out to be rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancerous growth that originates in the soft tissues of the body.

Kyle was treated with eight months of chemotherapy and several months of radiation. Then while playing on his high school tennis team in 2004, he felt pain in his right knee.

“We went back to the University of Chicago expecting to hear that Kyle had a sports injury,” said Valerie. Instead, an x-ray showed that Kyle had a malignant tumor in the proximal tibia of his right knee. A biopsy revealed the tumor was osteosarcoma.

“Kyle is a remarkable person,” said orthopedic surgeon Rex Haydon, MD, PhD, assistant professor of surgery. “It would have been so easy to become very discouraged, but he kept marching through all of his care.”

Due to advances in chemotherapy treatment in recent years and to limb salvage surgery, Haydon and James Nachman, MD, professor of pediatrics and the oncologist who treated both of Kyle’s cancers, were able to save Kyle’s leg. In addition to six rounds of chemotherapy, Kyle underwent limb salvage and reconstruction surgery.

“Facing cancer a second time was clearly devastating,” said Nachman. “He fought through it and managed to finish high school on time and go on to college.”

Your Support is Valuable

“There is no better exercise for your heart than reaching down and helping to lift someone up.” —Bernard Meltzer

I recently came across this quote and it summed-up to me, what the Rally for Kids with Cancer event is all about.

The thought of children suffering from cancer is simply an unacceptable reality.  This is what drives us [the Rally for Kids with Cancer organizers, our fundraising stars (drivers), generous sponsors and charitable celebrities] to unite and make a difference, one child at a time.

The simple [yet rewarding] act of bringing a smile to the faces of these brave children is possible due to the continuous generosity of our supporters and celebrity navigators.  Anyone who has made a commitment to this event has chosen to extend much-needed compassion and support to children and their families facing this disease.

Tobin’s Story

April 14th, 2010

Tobin Haas

Child’s condition: Brain tumour

Age: 10

“SickKids means we have our son.  We know we are in the best hands in the world.  I can’t imagine being anywhere else, and I want people to know there is so much hope, even when you think the worst has happened. SickKids helped to give us that hope.” – Karen, Tobin’s mom

In the spring of 2002, Karen Haas noticed her two-year-old son Tobin, was becoming more and more lethargic. He was having problems walking straight and was vomiting occasionally in the mornings. She took Tobin to their family doctor who sent them to their local hospital for further testing. A CT scan showed a mass on Tobin’s brain and he was immediately transferred to The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) for specialized care. Karen and her husband, Frank, were told that Tobin had a brain tumour. Until they heard those words, Tobin’s parents had yet to realize that he was critically ill.

The next day, Tobin had an MRI which was followed immediately by surgery to remove the tumour. It had grown to the size of a baseball in his brain. The neurosurgeon successfully removed 80 per cent of Tobin’s tumour, and a combination of chemotherapy and radiation was used to reduce the risk of the remaining cancerous cells. His treatment involved Stereotactic Interstitial Irradiation, a new type of therapy available only at SickKids at the time.

Tobin was doing well after surgery but in 2005, the tumour grew back, doctors scheduled a second surgery and removed 98 per cent of the tumour. Tobin had 18 cycles of chemotherapy over the next year and a half, but once again he bounced back and resumed all his regular activities, school, baseball and even hockey.

Then in June 2009, a routine MRI showed that the tumour had grown again. Surgery was once again scheduled and the tumour was completely removed. The family was devastated to learn that the cancer had spread down to Tobin’s spine. He once again required radiation which lasted throughout September and October.

To date, Tobin has had 20 cycles of chemotherapy and 33 radiation treatments and he is tackling this latest recurrence with a positive attitude. Tobin continues to visit SickKids every few weeks for check-up appointments.

With your support, together we can make a difference in the lives of children, like Tobin, currently battling cancer. Rally for Kids with Cancer and help  make a change!

Your Fundraising Makes a Difference

August 28th, 2009

The Rally for Kids with Cancer presented by Rosseau Asset Management (Toronto) is less than 27 days away and your fundraising efforts are needed more than ever. With every email request sent and every donation collected, you – our Rally Drivers and supporters – are making a difference in the lives of children currently battling cancer. Children like Madison who at the age of 10 discovered she had acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

We are honored to share with you Madison’s inspirational storey of determination and hope in the face of cancer.

madison                           In the summer of 2007, Madison, 10, was starring as one of the Scouts in “To Kill a Mockingbird” at the Avon theatre in Stratford. By the time the fall came, she started to complain of exhaustion and back pain. Extremely worried, her parents took her to a hospital. A blood test revealed alarming results and Madison was referred to The Hospital for Sick Children. There, they discovered she had acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

ALL is the most common childhood cancer, characterized by the production of a large number of white blood cells. These cells multiply quickly and take over normal blood cells, which can lead to bone marrow failure. If left undiagnosed or not caught in time, ALL is fatal. Fortunately, Madison was diagnosed and began her treatment protocol right away.

After spending two weeks in the hospital, Madison went home to continue her treatment as an outpatient. She visited SickKids on a regular basis while she continued her intense chemotherapy protocol. In April, Madison began her two-and-a-half-year maintenance period, still receiving chemotherapy and taking oral medication. Her family is relieved that she is in the capable hands of extremely knowledgeable, experienced and caring medical professionals.

Her condition has not affected her bubbly and cheerful personality, or more importantly, her determination. She envisions walking across a stage to receive a Tony award one day. For now, she is setting her sights locally and is currently participating in the Toronto production of “The Sound of Music”.

I can’t say enough about the staff at SickKids. Doctors, nurses, child life – they all took the time to comfort us and assure us that everything would be fine.” – Peggy-Jo Scott

OMG have you seen the cars?

August 11th, 2009

Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Aston Martins – oh my!

OK as a self-proclaimed aficionado of luxury vehicles, I had to check out the action of the Rally for Kids with Cancer Scavenger Cup. Let me tell you – it did not disappoint! This is an exotic car lover’s dream. Just to see these automotive works of art take to the streets one after the other, is really a sight to behold. Unfortunately, I have to admire these automotive wonders from afar, but I have proudly leant my support by making a donation to a participating celebrity.

If you are a true lover or better yet a very lucky owner of an exotic vehicle, don’t miss your chance to participate in a Rally for Kids with Cancer event. Become a sponsor or sign up as a driver or donate to this worthwhile cause.

This event successfully combines two of my greatest loves – exotic cars and donating funds to Children’s cancer care, treatment and research.

See you at the finish line. I will be the one with the biggest smile on my face!
